Empty Nest

Flown away for the sure winter
I sway no more under your weight
Naked beneath the westerly moon
I wane under a calm December
Alone against the somnolent cold
I stand secure underneath the stars
Sleeping awake under a new sky
I stand watch over your nests
As you sing and sleep in a bed tonight
Don’t forget what lies waiting
When the light is fresh and young
Budding in the stillness of slumber
I will wait for your songs and mirth
I will wait for your signs and taps
I will wait till the cold recedes
I will wait till the wind is gone
I will wait till the days are warm
I will wait until the sun is up
I will wait till a renewed heat
Fly away now. How warm you must be.
